Abstract
This 1984-85 report is 13th issue on the Census of Manufacturing Industries (CMI). Data presented in the report relate to those manufacturing establishments which were registered with the Chief Inspector of Factories under the Factories Acts of 1934 and 1965 and also responded to the census enumeration programme. The tables incorporated have detailed information on structures, operations and outputs of industrial units.
Field data collection was taken up beginning January, 1986. The data collection programme could be completed by June, 1986. This long six month collection period became indispensible since followups to improve coverage had to be undertaken in case of all non-response establishments which turned out as high as 625. Processing of data on computer took longer time, 10 months As such, the report has a publication lag of about 2 years. All possible efforts are being taken to reduce time lag of subsequent reports by cutting-down both data collection and computer tabulation times.
Main objectives of the census were to determine volume of industrial production, fixed capital investment, employment and gross value added in manufacturing industries. Data collected related to:
- fixed assets
- employment and cost thereof
- value and quantity of raw materials consumed
- inventories of physical assets
- cost and quantity of fuel consumed
- quantity and value of goods produced
- non-industrial cost, and indirect taxes
- value added at factor cost, etc.

Two questionnaires were adopted. One was a long questionnaire and canvassed for establishments excepting handloom units. In case of handloom establishments a short questionnaire was used.

Data Processing
Cleaning Operations
All filled-out questionnaires were first edited manually, Any omissions, inconsistencies and errors found in the returns were corrected by contacting again the concerned respondents. In a few instances, for which information could not be obtained, imputation was done.
Manual coding of specific items was also done, After both manual editing and coding, all returns were sent for computer processing. Table obtained from computer print-out had data by Bangladesh standard industrial classificatim (BSIC) developed in conformity to International sta.ndard industrial classification (ISIC).
