Abstract
This detailed report of 1981-82 on Census of Manufacturing Industries in Bangladesh represents various information including handloom Industries on structure of industries total investmen, Physical stock, depreciation average daily employment, employment cost, capacity of power equipment, industrial cost, value of materials, fuels and electricity consumed, products and by-products manufactured, direct and indirect taxes census value added and value added at factor cost by all the representative group of manufacturing industries.
The object of this detailed report is to meet the immediate need of the users.
We have presented information in 30 tables in respect of 3356 large and medium scale-establishments (including handloom) out of 3676 to which notices were issued. The remaining factories either reported as closed or submitted 'Nil' returns.
This census covers industrial establishment as defined under section 2(j) and 5(l) of the factories Act, 1934 and 2(f) of the factories Act, 1956 but it does not cover mining establishments.
Starting from the collection of data upto publication of this report, we had to facea a number of difficulties. However we are constantly endeavouring to improve the census in respect of coverage quality, quality of data and timely publication.
I am thankful to those officers and staff of ITLS & Wing of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics who took much pain to complete this assignment in the shortest possible time.
The information provided in this report, I am sure, will be useful to the users.
Any comments and suggestions for irnprovement,howeyer, will be highly appreciable.

Geographic Coverage
Section 2(j) Factory :- means those units which employed 20 or more workers on any day of the preceding year and in any part of which manufacturing activities are carried out with the aid of power.
Section 5(l) :- means those units which employed 10 or more workers on any day of the preceding year, weather using power or not in the manufacturing precess.
Section 2(f) :- means premises including the preciding there of whereon 10 or more workers are working or were working on any day of the preceding twelve months and in any part of which a manufacturing precess is carried on with or without the aid of power.
Thus the coverage of the Census extends in principle to all registered large and mefium scale manufacturing industries with 10 or more workers and in which manufacturing process in carried on with or without the aid of power.

Two types of questionnaires were developed for the census. Long-form questionnaire (in Enqlish)meant for large and medium scale industries and short-form questionnaire (in Bengali) meant for handloom industries only. All.establishments excluding handloom industries were contacted with long-form questionnaire and handloom industries with short-form questionnaire.

Data Processing

Cleaning Operations
All filled-in schedules were fully edited to ensure certain standard of quality in data supplied by delecting missions, inconsistencies and error and if necessary, taking correction measures. This precess involved (i) inspection of the questionnaire for mission (ii) examination of the item of information for both internal (among data in the questionnaire) and external (with data from other sources) consistencies. Inadequacies detected in the questionnaire were corrected by questioning the respondents or by imputation.
