Abstract
The 1986-87 report of the Census of Manufacturing Industries (CMI), is the 15th in its series. Data presented in the report relate to manufacturing establishments registered with the Chief Inspector of Faôtories under the Factories Act, 1934 and responded to the census. The tables contain information on structures, operations and outputs of the units. Some comparison tables have also been incorporated in this report which reflect key findings of the 1985-86and 1986-87 censuses of manufacturing industries. I believe the users will find the report useful. The officers and staff of the CMI section of the Industry, Trade, Labour Statistics and National Income (ITLS & NI) Wing of BBS, responsible for collection and compilation of the data deserve our thanks. The analysis, interpretation and publication of this report was performed by Md. Zobdul Hoque, Deputy-Director, in-charge of the CMI who was assisted by M.A. Jalil, Statistical Officer. Mr. Azizur Rahman, Joint-Director, ITLS & NI wing, also deserve thanks for redering all possible help and co-operation to the census.
The main objectives of CMI 1986-87 were to determine the volume of industrial production, fixed capital investment, employment and gross value added in manufacturing industries. Data collected related to:
- fixed assets
- employment and cost thereof
- value and quantity of raw materials consumed
- inventories of physical assets
- cost and quantity of fuel consumed
- quantity and value of goods produced
- non-industrial cost, and indirect taxes
- value added at factor cost, etc.

A questionnaire with a instruction manual in Bengali was used (see annexure 2). The questionnaire was canvassed both for large and medium scale establishments and also for handloom establishments.

Data Processing
Cleaning Operations
All filled-in questionnaires were first edited manually. Any omissions, inconsistencies, and errors found in the returns were corrected by contacting the respondents. In a few instances, where information gap could not be filled-in, imputations were made.
Manual coding of specific items was also done. After both editing and coding returns were sent for computer processing. Tables obtained from computer as form of computer printout are directly used for publication. Tabulation of;census data was based on Bangladesh standard industrial classification (BSIC'86) developed in conformity to International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC), 1968.
