Abstract
This survey was an exploratory study to examine the volume and pattern of gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) in cultivated biological assets in the country. Broad objective of the Survey was to provide a reliable national estimate of gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) in (i) animals and (ii) trees/plants resources. The findings of the survey are expected to be used in compilation of expenditure based GDP in accordance with the conceptual framework of SNA-2008. However, the specific objectives of the survey are:
* To estimate the total number (stock) of animal resources (cows, buffaloes, sheep and goats) managed and controlled by households and private animal farms;
* To estimate gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) in animal resources yielding repeat product for several years (more than one year) managed and controlled by households and private animal farms;
* To estimate gross value added (GVA) associated with GFCF in animal resources;
* To estimate gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) in tree and plant resources including rubber and tea plants whose natural growth and generation are managed and controlled either by household or by private organization/company;
* To estimate gross value added (GVA) associated with GFCF in tree and plant resources.

Sampling Procedure
Universe: For household survey, all households in the geographical area of Bangladesh were treated as the universe which was the focus of study.
Primary sampling unit (PSU): Mouzas/ mahallas (which are well defined land unit) were treated as primary sampling unit (PSU) for this survey. Mauzas /mahallas comprise of a number of households. Mouzas /mahallas were taken as Primary Sampling Unit (PSU) because of the following reasons:
Have clearly identifiable boundaries that are stable over time;
Cover the target population completely
Ultimate Sampling unit: As it was a household survey the ultimate sampling unit (USU) was the household. It was the smallest unit which was the subject of sample selection.
Sampling frame: 2008 Agriculture Census frame was used for conducting this household based survey. A comprehensive and complete list of mouzas/ mahallas with several ancillary information such as number of cattle, buffaloes, goat and sheep in each mouzas / mahallas were available from 2008 Agriculture census. Total mouzas/mahallas having any type of animal resources (either cattle or buffalo or goat or sheep or all) constituted sampling frame. A total of 400 mouzas/ mahallas were selected as first stage sampling unit following the method described later.
However, with a view to increase the precision of the estimate and widespread distribution of the samples throughout the country, it was suggested that a total of 4,000 households might be considered as sample.

Response Rate
A survey’s response rate is viewed as an important indicator of survey quality. According to the sampling scheme of this survey, as many as 4000 households, 379 cow farms, 176 buffalo farms, 99 goat farms, 144 sheep farms, 58 tea gardens and 58 rubber gardens were sampled for investigation. Data were collected from 3981 sampled households and thus the response rate was 99.53%. Nonresponse rate was insignificant. Response rate for animal farms, rubber and tea gardens was 100%. In the case of some households and establishments, data collectors had to visit several times to collect information required for. Also, there was no non-coverage error due to non-findings or delineation of the selected establishments or due to absence of the owners of the establishments.

Type of Research Instrument
In order to conduct the survey a total of three appropriate structured questionnaires were prepared: the Household Questionnaire, the Animal Farm Questionnaire, and the Tea and Rubber garden Questionnaire. Draft questionnaires were prepared by the in-house working group and then those questionnaires were revised in consultation with stakeholders. The stakeholders identified the key issues and then those issues were translated in to questions and answer categories. The draft questionnaires were placed before the technical committee. Based on the suggestion and recommendations made by the technical committee the questionnaires were further modified. The survey questionnaires were pretested and finalized based on the findings available from pre-test of the questionnaire. The draft questionnaires were pre-tested to assess the following features:
* To test the suitability of the structure and terminology used in the questionnaires;
* To know the appropriate time required to fill-in the questionnaires by the interviewers;
* To evaluate the ability and willingness of the respondents to understand the questions;
* To determine the quantitative range of different variables;
* To test the appropriateness regarding logical flow or sequence of the questions ;
* To assess problems during pre-test that would likely be encountered during the actual;
survey operation and identify solutions for such problems.

Data Processing
Cleaning Operations
All filled-in questionnaires were debugged, edited and coded. After careful scrutiny, the filled-in-questionnaires were then displaced to the computer operators for data entry with the software installed for this purpose. The entire process was carried out under the close supervision and guidance of a programmer. Programmer developed data processing layout using appropriate computer programmes. Once the preliminary database was developed, all the information was tested for validity and internal consistency. Data validation was done to ensure that the built-in programme operates on clean, correct and useful data.
