Abstract
Bangladesh is an agriculture-based country where agriculture sector plays a vital role in accelerating the economic growth. It is therefore important to have an effective, sustainable and environment-friendly agricultural system in order to make our country self-sufficient in food production. The Government of Bangladesh is determined to develop the overall agriculture sector keeping in view of the goals set out in the 7th Five Year Plan and Sustainable Development Goals 2030. As leading agency for tracking SDG indicators, Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) is taking initiatives in data capturing concerned to various SDG indicators. Agriculture Census 2008 is such initiative for monitoring indicators related to agricultural SDGs.
We trust that the census data will provide valuable information on the number of agriculture holdings, their area, tenancy, irrigation status, size of holdings, land ownership, land use, agriculture labour, number of poultry birds, livestock and many others. I believe that policy makers, planners, researchers and all other users will be benefitted from this document. At this stage I am grateful to BBS for bringing out this preliminary report containing basic information to serve the initial demand of our users. I am eagerly waiting to see the detailed report following the processing of the data within the shortest possible time.
Agriculture Census is the source of benchmark information of Agriculture sector of a country. It contributes around 14% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provides employment for around 40% of the total labour force of the country. The direct as well as indirect share of agriculture export earnings is also significant. Most importantly, food security of the country’s huge population is critically dependent on agriculture. Therefore, the development of agriculture sector is virtually synonymous with the development of our country. Timely and realistic statistics on agriculture sector is pre-requisite for sound agriculture development planning. Agriculture Census, one of the largest statistical operations undertaken by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, is the basic source of information relating to the structure and nature of agricultural activities in the country.

Type of Research Instrument
A structural questionnaire was designed to collect information on agriculture. The questionnaire was pre-tested at the field level to test the relevance and appropriateness of the survey instruments. The questionnaire was then modified and finalized on the basis of the findings available from the pre-testing.
