A census of waqf estates was conducted throughout Bangladesh by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics at the request of the Ministry of Religi ous Affairs. The census was conducted in January- February, 1986 by the zonal officers appointed from among the staff of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
Waqf Estate has been defined as land or other immovable property (a part or whole) donated by a person or a group of persons or an organization for any social, religious or state activity without having any return. "Debottar shampatti" donated by Hindu community is not included in this census.
OBJECTIVES OF THE CENSUS
The main objectives of the census were:
a) To determine the exact number of Waqf Estates by administrative areas such as Region (District), Zila (New District), Upazila, Union and Mauza.
b) To classify the Waqf Estates by use such as Mosque, Eidgah, Graveyard, Madrasa, School etc.
c) To determine the sources of income and types of expenditure of Waqf Estates alongwith other characteristics.
The questionnaire, given in Appendix, was developed and designed by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics in consultation with the Waqt Adminis trator and the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
