Abstract
Collection and compilation of foreign trade statistics (FTS) is one of the core activities of Bangladesh Bureau .of Statistics (BBS). The collected information are dully coded and edited by National Accounting Wing and then pass on to Computer Wing for onward data processing.
This foreign trade statistics issue (19th issue) is slightly different from the previous one. For minimizing the time lag, data on exports and imports for the year 2003-04 and 2004-05 are given together in this issue. So, the foreign trade statistics under the caption "Foreign Trade Statistics of Bangladesh 2003-04" will not separately. be . published. Data Processing

Cleaning Operations
Previously, foreign trade documents (import and Export) were collected from Chittagong Customs Office. Now data in CD ROM are collected by Foreign Trade Section of BBS from NBR on monthly basis. On receipt of export import information from NBR. the said diskettes are sent to BBS Computer Section for re-arranging, processing etc. After completion of the job, data are sent to Foreign Trade Section, BBS which does the work of correction, compilation and editing and then sent to the Computer Section for rearranging the said data. Again, the Computer Section send the printed export-import data to FTS. Fimially, after correction and amendment by FTS these are again sent to the Computer Section for print out of final data.
On receipt of the trade bills from Burimaii (Land Customs) and shipping bills from Khulna, entries are made in the control register and the bills are sorted out according to the date and type of trade. After sorting the documents are bound in the form of a book which is known as batch. Each batch consists of 50-60 bills covering the bills of a particular date. The batches are distribuied among the coders for coding the information. The basic informatin, such as commodity specified by type. quantity of each commodity according to uints prescribed in the HS, value, export destination and other relevant information are coded, checked and edited properly on the documents. On completion of coding work, the value is taped from the documents. Batch totals are entered in the control register for subsequent matching with computer totals. Batches are then sent to the Computer Will, for capturing the data in diskettes.
Though most of the tabulations are made according to Harmonized commodity description and coding system, selected tabulations are made on the basis of category of goods by different exporting or importing accounts. Selected monthly tables are published in the Monthly Statistical Bulletin and other annual and monthly publications of BBS. Foreign Trade Statistics are published on fiscal year basis i.e. July 1 to June 30.
