The Household Expenditure Survey of Bangladesh 1973-74
The present report includes the annual results obtained,'through the sample survey on household expenditure conducted on a quarterly basis by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics in the rural and urban areas of the country during 1973-74.The survey covers the whole geographical areas of Bangladesh and households of every size and social & economic classes for their living on charity from the scope of this survey.
- to obtain information related to household expenditures and consumption patterns;
- to collect information about levels of living;
- to collect data necessary, for calculation of national expenditure on private consumption;
- to collect data related to the calculation of demand function;
- to determine weights for computing the consumer price index;
- to monitor changes in the poverty line, and
- to provide data for computation for national accounts.

Sample survey data [ssd]
Rural- The whole geographical area of Bangladesh classified as rural in the 1961 census of populaiton, constituted the pural sampling universe.
Urban- The geographical area of Bangladesh defined and classified as urban in the population census of 1961, constituted the urban sampling univers.

Rural 1sr stage sampling frame list of villages containing infoemation on location, population and households according to the 1961 census was considered as the sampling framefoe the 1st stage sampling units. Steps had been taken to ensure that there were no omissions, duplications and other types on inaccuracies and tnat the sampling inits could be geographically located and easily indentificable in the field.
2nd stage sampling frame- To have an up-to-date frame of household within the selected 1st stage units a completely new list of households was made at the time of enumeration using the schedule specially made for the purpose. Infomation on some additional characteristics related to the subject of enquiry was collected for each household.
Urban- 1st stage sampling frame list of the electoral units of the urban ateas designated as such by the Election Commission of Bangladesh as constituencies for the selection of the Mumbers of Constitutent Assembly during 1973 grneral elections was considered as the frame for the 1st stage sampling units.
2nd stage sampling frame The technique adopted in making frame for rural 2 stage units was followed to have a current frame of households within the selected 1st stage sampling units.
The whole country was divided into two sub-universes, namely
i) Rural Areas of Bangladesh
ii) Urban Areas of Bangladesh
Independent sample design was used for each sub universe.

Mode of data collection
The field stuff in each quarter consisted of 130 primary staff and 27 supervisory staff. all of whom were full-time regular staff of the Bureau. The training programme for field staff lasted four days.
